Plagiarism on the agenda at seminars

Academics in Brazil are invited to discuss plagiarism prevention and detection at two free events later this month.

The seminars, to be held in Rio and Sao Paolo on August 27 and 29 respectively, will showcase research into ethics and integrity in scholarly work.

The events have been organised by UK-based PlagiarismAdvice.org, which is sponsored by Turnitin, the world-leading originality checking and plagiarism prevention software.

A recent survey conducted by Plagiarism Advice found that more than three quarters of Brazilian university students believe teachers would be unable to spot plagiarism in their work.

Gill Rowell, Academic Advisor for Turnitin, said: "Plagiarism is a growing global problem.

"These seminars will provide a unique opportunity to share international research and perspectives on academic integrity which in turn helps create a culture of honesty in academia.

"We draw on and best practice and policy from our worldwide academic network and lessons learned from the UK’s national plagiarism strategy which was rolled out 10 years and ago and which other countries are now replicating."

Guest speakers will include Professor Marcelo Krokoscz, of Alvares Penteado Business College Foundation (FECAP) who will talk about atualidades e tendências no enfrentamento do plágio acadêmico and Sonia Maria Ramos de Vasconcelos, Doutora em Educação, Gestão e Difusão em Ciências of UFRJ who will share her research about plagiarism in science and the humanties.

The seminars were organised following the success of a similar event hosted by USP last year.

One attendee said: "Todo o evento foi muito bom, eu aprendi bastante sobre as implicações do plágio.

"Eu fiquei gratamente surpresa com a existência de um programa de aferição de textos duplicados."

The events will be held in Rio de Janeiro on Terça-feira, 27 de Agosto 2013, das 13:30 às 17:30, Auditório Hélio Fraga - CCS/UFRJ - BL. K – 2º andar , Campus do Fundão, and in São Paulo on Terça-feira, 27 de Agosto 2013, das 13:30 às 17:30, Auditório Hélio Fraga - CCS/UFRJ - BL. K – 2º andar , Campus do Fundão
