Newcastle upon Tyne, UK ()
Turnitin and Crossref today announced a new publisher member, the global Peter Lang Academic Publishing Group, to Crossref Similarity Check powered by iThenticate (formerly, CrossCheck powered by iThenticate) initiative.
Publishers participating in Crossref Similarity Check powered by iThenticate, which are now in excess of 800, strengthen the editorial processes of their journals and enjoy access to the world’s leading text similarity checking software powered by Turnitin’s proprietary iThenticate product.
This partnership between Turnitin and Crossref makes the iThenticate database the most comprehensive in the world, consisting of some 50 million published articles from some of the world’s most prestigious academic publishers.
The newest academic publisher partner, Peter Lang Academic Publishing Group, specializes in the social sciences and humanities and covers the complete spectrum from monographs to student textbooks. It publishes approximately 1,800 new titles each year in traditional and digital formats, as well as Open Access, and has a backlist of 55,000 plus titles.
“This is an excellent addition to the service for our European customers. Peter Lang has the expertise to publish in several languages such as English, German, French, Spanish and Italian and publishes some of the most robust language content in the world,” said Mark Harnor, Director of Business Development for Turnitin.
As do all members of the service, Peter Lang will deposit an original copy of their published, DOI assigned content, including journal articles, books, and conference proceedings, into Turnitin’s secure database, and in turn are able to match against the existing content in that database.
“Publishing models and the distribution and consumption of both metadata and content are undergoing rapid change and Peter Lang is investing heavily in its infrastructure to keep pace with these changes.
“By integrating Crossref Similarity Check into our editorial process, we ensure that every effort is made to determine the originality of the academic content and thereby prevent plagiarism.
“The integrity and quality of academic research we publish is imperative and we have joined the Crossref Similarity Check service so that our academics benefit from this useful supporting tool in a globalised market where academic content is growing exponentially,” says Peter Lang CEO, Kelly Shergill.
The publisher will start the process of adding their published content into Turnitin’s database in the next few weeks.

We are Crossref, a not-for-profit membership organization for scholarly publishing working to make content easy to find, link, cite, and assess. We do it in five ways: rallying the community; tagging metadata; running a shared infrastructure; playing with new technology; and making tools and services to improve research communications. It’s as simple—and as complicated—as that.
