“It was the first software of its kind to enter the Indian market, and it remains much more reliable than other tools due to its extensive publisher network and unrivaled content coverage, which now includes more contributions from India.”

Dr. Ramesh C Gaur is one of the most sought-after speakers to talk about plagiarism, its detection and avoidance, and academic integrity in India. His expertise is often requested by various academic committees, including UGC National Committee on Plagiarism Regulations 2017. He has organized and participated in more than 100 workshops and lectures across different part of the globe , and served as an investigator in select plagiarism cases. “Turnitin is always part of my slides because I believe that Turnitin is the best software to check plagiarism,” Dr Gaur says. “It was the first software of its kind to enter the Indian market, and it remains much more reliable than other tools due to its extensive publisher network and unrivaled content coverage, which now includes more contributions from India.”

Dr. Gaur’s winning approach towards to promote academic integrity – developing policy, choosing the right tools, and making sure that everyone is properly trained – has been among key factors in order to maintain Jawaharlal Nehru University’s reputation in the country. This year the university received the highest A++ grading with a score of 3.74 on a 4-point scale by the autonomous National Assessment and Accreditation Council, based on the quality of its research and teaching. It is constantly ranked No. 1 University in India by National Institutional Ranking Framework.

With his endorsement, the university approved a subscription to Turnitin in 2012 and since then, Dr. Gaur says, students have gained a significantly better understanding of good academic practices. The number of JNU reports and articles accepted by international publications has increased appreciably.

Based on his proposed measures to promote academic integrity, students need to submit a certificate of both originality and authenticity during submission to ensure the contribution of new ideas which further adds value to others.

Going forward, Dr. Gaur wants to raise awareness in India of the importance of the library as the logical and “most happening place” to promote academic integrity and improve the quality of research projects. He makes a good case that librarians are well-connected to the research world and have a deep understanding of citations and how to avoid plagiarism. He believes that libraries can play an important role in enhancing the quality of research and in managing research output through latest tools and technologies. Dr. Gaur says: “Plagiarism, reference management tools are the domain of librarians. We need to integrate libraries with research."
