Kasey Spencer

eLearning teacher, English teacher and Educational Technology Coach: Oxford Academy, Anaheim Union High School District, California

Kasey Spencer teaches AP Language and Composition at Oxford Academy in Cypress, CA. Oxford Academy is a college preparatory public school that teaches seventh through twelfth grade and draws from all of the schools in the Anaheim Union High School District. This ensures the school is populated with driven and intelligent students from a wide variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.

As part of her job, Kasey sometimes has to teach five full AP courses at one time in addition to her other duties, including serving as educational technology coach for the district. This presents serious challenges when it comes to giving students feedback on their work, especially when she is getting writing from 180 students.

Kasey initially embraced online grading through Turnitin Feedback Studio as a way to curb cheating, but quickly took to it as a way of providing feedback on the writing process. The majority of assignments she assigns are peer reviewed as well as instructor reviewed and, as a result, students are held more accountable for their writing than before, and take more ownership of their work. Kasey says that the quality of the writing in her classes has improved and she is better able to encourage her students to take risks with their work and push their boundaries as writers.
