“The biggest advantage for us, when it comes to things like tutorials, is that a tutor can access the feedback that their student has received on different work. So, it allows us to have more oversight of students’ entire academic career,” says Miller.

Dr. Kirsty Miller, Director of Teaching and Learning for the School of Psychology at the University of Lincoln, is one of those exceptional educators who goes above and beyond to help students achieve great outcomes. Under her programme leadership, students ranked Psychology at Lincoln as the top psychology course in the UK, according to the annual National Student Survey (NSS)1.

Miller was nominated for a Global Innovation Award for her bold leadership improving feedback between staff and students and deepening student engagement. In 2014, she initiated a collaborative project to develop a MS Word form that could be used to improve the consistency and quality of marking. This year, she worked to embed that form within Turnitin and roll it out across the whole programme.

She understood that the success of the new tools depended on academics knowing how to use them properly, so she arranged for staff training. So far, everything is working as planned. Miller says they’ve learned through informal feedback that students like the in-text comments, which link to grading criteria, and having the ability to easily refer to digitally stored assignments as needed. She says academics like being able to see when (or if) students have accessed their feedback.
