Argument Paper

This rubric is used to grade a final draft of an Argument Paper. It is based on a 6 paragraph essay structure requiring three supporting arguments and a rebuttal to a potential opposition argument.

This rubric utilizes the following criteria:

  • Introduction: The questioning technique was assigned: begin with a question; add in-general info on the topic leading to the position (thesis).
  • Thesis: The writer's position on the issue/topic.
  • Support Para 1: The first supportive paragraph: begins with a topic sentence (reason), includes at least 2 supportive points and specific details. Uses 1 appeal. Transition words included.
  • Support Para 2: The second supportive paragraph: begins with a topic sentence (reason), includes at least 2 supportive points and specific details. Uses 1 appeal. Transition words included.
  • Support Para 3: The third supportive paragraph: begins with a topic sentence (reason), includes at least 2 supportive points and specific details. Uses 1 appeal. Transition words included.
  • Opposition Para 4:The 5th paragraph begins with a in-general topic sentence that indicates that the opposing view will be revealed; at least 2 reasons, specific details and a rebuttal.
  • Closing: The Call-to-Action technique: the thesis and body is recapped; the audience is asked to DO something about the problem addressed.
  • Synthesis: 3 direct quotes added to each of the 3 body paragraphs. in-text citations and works cited included, MLA format.
