Anthony Iodice and his staff at the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at Iona College (CELTIC) were asked to develop an online tutorial program on academic integrity and plagiarism initially for the institution’s Honors Program students. From the beginning of this project, CELTIC involved both faculty AND students to help develop the program. While they were building the tutorial, the students, on their own, decided to discuss and build their own honor code. The resultant program does not simply discuss why plagiarism is unacceptable, and what its consequences would be, but it also provides best practices on how to avoid it. For instance: encouraging students to develop time-management skills to avoid situations where they did not have enough time to finish a paper, and would be tempted to plagiarize. The finished tutorial was of such high quality that the college decided to roll out a version of it to Iona College’s entire entering freshman class.
