Three BRAND NEW features!
We're pleased to announce the release of three new frequently requested features:
- Shortcut from Inbox to Modify Assignment Settings
Instructors can now access assignment settings directly from the inbox for that assignment, instead of modifying individual settings for each paper, or having to navigate back to the assignment settings panel.
- Download GradeMark Analytics as Spreadsheet Files
The new detailed analytic reports generated by GradeMark may now be exported at the click of a button. As of July 2009, GradeMark now generates an extensive table of data regarding student performance on various grading marks and rubrics. When exported as a spreadsheet file (.xls), instructors can perform additional analysis on this data and gain more insight into how they can better address the needs of their students, both individually and as a whole class. Instructors can also incorporate this data into other vital records and reports.
- Progress Bar for Zip File Uploads
In addition to recent improvements to the overall process for file submissions (the limit for individual files has increased from 10MB to 20MB, and the zip file limit has increased from 100MB to 200MB), a progress bar now indicates the progress of the submission of a zip file.
Recent features & language releases
In case you missed our announcements over past two months, please note the release of over a dozen new features and enhancements. Highlights include:
- An option to exclude quoted (and biblographic) material from papers' Similarity Indexes for an entire assignment -- not just for individual papers.
- An option to exclude small matches in Originality Reports to help streamline the process of evaluating your students' papers for unoriginal content. Instructors can choose the size of excluded matches as a number of words (such as 8 or 11), or a percentage of all words in a paper (such as 4%).
- An expanded Similarity Index that shows multiple sources for highlighted matches in the Originality Report -- not just a single possible source.
- A summary report for GradeMark that presents a table of all graded papers in an assignment with every rubric criterion rating and how many times each QuickMark grading item was used on each one!
This is just a sample of the new features. View the complete list.
Turnitin is also now available in ten languages!
We now offer Turnitin Originality Checking & GradeMark services in Spanish, German, French, Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Japanese, Korean, Thai and Malay. Access to these languages is included AT NO EXTRA CHARGE in your annual subscription! Use the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the Turnitin.com website to try it.
Significant expansion of search & text matching
As of June 2009, our search and text matching capability has been greatly expanded, both in REACH (finding matches to more content from more sites and providers), and IMMEDIACY (finding matches to very recently updated content, like news). Turnitin is now better than ever at finding text matches -- especially for up-to-the-minute news and info.
Further expansion of our search and text matching via wider-reaching, expanded search technologies include:
- Internet search expansion by over 20 billion searchable objects
- A multi-language platform investment that greatly expanded our indexing and content matching to over 30 languages -- including character-based, non-alphabetic languages
- Continuing investment in our own technolgy for crawling, indexing and archiving web content, proprietary publication content and student papers.
WriteCheck as a student learning tool
Over the years, we've had repeated requests from instructors for a way to let students independently pre-check their papers for unintentional plagiarism. As a result, we now offer WriteCheck™ (powered by Turnitin) to students at writecheck.turnitin.com. Developed at the urging of high school and college instructors from every discipline, WriteCheck addresses the need for students to check their own work for proper use of source materials. See the FAQ about WriteCheck.
Effectiveness Summary Available
The Turnitin Originality Checking service is helping educators encourage original student writing and discourage plagiarism. A recent series of in-depth statistical studies reveals that when secondary schools, colleges and universities use Turnitin:
- Students become better writers and researchers. They create work with more original content and learn appropriate ways to use and cite source material.
- Teachers save time. With Turnitin’s easy-to-read Originality Reports, hours once wasted searching for evidence of suspected plagiarism can be spent providing feedback to produce better writers.
- Institutions improve their overall levels of learning. Continued use of Turnitin helps ensure the integrity of an institution and its educational mission — and the degrees it grants... more

Scheduled Maintenance Window: Starting on September 2009, there will be regularly scheduled maintenance windows on the first and the third Fridays of the month, from 11:30 pm to 3:30 am Pacific Time (US).
If instructors have set assignment due dates in these windows, they might want to consider changing them. We regret any inconvenience these scheduled maintenance windows may cause. For answers to questions that faculty, students or administrators may have about this, see the Help Center.
Browser Support Update: As of August 1, 2009, Turnitin and WriteCycle will work best with Firefox (v.2+), Safari (v.2+) and Internet Explorer (v.7+); we will no longer be providing support and fixes for earlier versions of Internet Explorer.
